just a few sketches i made this afternoon. for the past few months i’ve been confused as how to draw men. i came up with a style i like for women and then tried to apply it to men but it hasn’t been working out. so i decided to simply draw men and women a little differently, the men will look a little more cartoony. aren’t men a little more cartoony anyway? of course that might change, i’m still trying to figure out my style and probably always will.
these are my first attempts at developing a character that will represent greed. at first i thought of a dollar sign but my boyfriend pointed out to me that people might think i mean that money is bad. which i don’t, i just think cheating people to make money is bad. also a dollar sign could simply represent the economy.
instead i’m heading towards a character with dollar signs for eyes. i kind of wanted to draw him chubby but since being greedy implies not spending much money i’m thinking skinny might be the way to go. at the same time most rich greedy people seem to be eating a lot… anyway, we’ll see. so far i like the one in the bottom right corner, but he might be a little too cute.
we’ve started working on our upcoming e-book last night. we have about 4 pages of bullet points of what we want to say and determined 4 different sections. we already have a few different ideas for the drawings. the greed character will be part of the book, not surprisingly. we already established a working method, we both sit down and come up with ideas for both the writing and drawings together. then he will take care of the writing and me the drawing, consulting each other’s opinions on each other’s work. we agreed i should not be doodling while trying to come up with writing ideas for team spirit purposes.
so i just launched my new website today, actually it’s more like a blog. i’ll probably try to improve it some more, but for the moment my scanner doesn’t work so i can’t do very much. i’m hoping it didn’t just die on me… i must give all the credit to my boyfriend for setting this up on wordpress, i couldn’t have done it without him.
we worked on the design together because two heads are better than one, but he came up with the idea of having a character in the corner that looks like he’s drawing the whole website. thanks boyfriend.
it was tough doing this because i had to go through all my old drawings that i’m really ashamed of. when i started trying to be an artist about two years ago i was having pretty bad health problems, and then during the last year i’ve been doing this hard-core raw food cleanse, which i’ve talked about before. i think it helped me get through this, but didn’t necessarily give birth to nice pieces of artwork. might sound like a lame excuse but it’s just true. since i became a lot healthier in the last few months, i’ve started improving very rapidly and now i’m starting to be a little prouder of my drawings. my sketches are a better representation of my current skill level. i think i’m going to have to re-draw all the rest. or just leave it there to rot. i just hate having those bad drawings hanging out on my site, they are not welcome here.
the old site had been designed by me about two years ago when i had no clue as how to do any coding. but i did learn a lot about web design this way. so the set-up was really boxy and even though i spent a lot of time trying to make it look pretty, it never really worked. i guess if you don’t do something well from the beginning it will end up slapping you in the face sooner or later. i’m really happy with it now, i hope you will be too.
